In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Israel launched airstrikes against targets linked to the Houthi movement in Yemen on Thursday. The strikes, which included the Sanaa International Airport, resulted in at least six fatalities, according to Houthi media reports.
The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was reportedly preparing to board a plane at the airport when it came under attack. A crew member on his plane was injured during the incident, highlighting the unexpected reach of the conflict.
The Israeli military confirmed that, in addition to the airport, it targeted military infrastructure at the ports of Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Kanatib along Yemen’s west coast. Strikes were also carried out on the Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations, aiming to diminish the Houthis’ operational capabilities.
Yemen’s Saba news agency reported that three individuals were killed in the strikes on the airport and another three in Hodeidah, with an additional 40 people wounded across the affected areas. The attacks have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in Yemen, a country already grappling with prolonged conflict and crisis.
In response to the airstrikes, the Houthi movement declared its readiness to retaliate. A spokesperson on the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV stated that they are prepared to “meet escalation with escalation,” signaling a potential increase in hostilities.
The Houthis have previously launched drones and missiles toward Israel, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. This ongoing exchange underscores the complex web of alliances and tensions in the region.
Following the strikes, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint video statement vowing to dismantle the Houthis’ military capabilities. Katz asserted, “We will hunt down all the Houthi leaders and strike them, just as we have done elsewhere. No one will escape Israel’s long arm. We will strike them to eliminate threats against Israel.”
The international community is closely monitoring the developments, with concerns rising over the potential for further escalation and its impact on regional stability. The situation remains fluid as both sides brace for possible retaliation.
