Sudan’s Unending War: A Forgotten Crisis Demands Global Attention

"This is a crisis of staggering scale and unimaginable brutality that demands urgent and sustained attention," said Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), during a Security Council briefing on December 19.

On April 15, 2023, civil war erupted in Sudan when clashes broke out in the capital, Khartoum, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict quickly spread beyond the capital and continues unabated. Over a year of relentless fighting has plunged Sudan into a state of complete disaster: violence, hunger, disease, death, and the destruction of the nation’s landscape and people.

In October 2024, Ted Chaiban, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, visited Sudan. He described the crisis as one of the most severe in living memory, expressing concern that Sudan and its plight are becoming increasingly forgotten by the international community.

Despite the severity of the situation, Sudan’s crisis is slipping from global consciousness. Humanitarian agencies are urging the international community to renew its focus and provide urgent assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people and work towards a resolution of the conflict.
