Sudan in 2024: A Forgotten Nation Amid Unending War

“This is a crisis of staggering scale and unimaginable brutality that demands urgent and sustained attention,” declared Edem Wosornu, director of operations at the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), during a poignant briefing to ambassadors in the Security Council on December 19.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a relentless civil war. The conflict ignited in the heart of the capital, Khartoum, where fierce clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). What began as localized skirmishes rapidly escalated, spreading beyond the capital and dragging the entire nation into a vortex of violence.

Over a year of incessant fighting has plunged Sudan into an unparalleled humanitarian disaster. The relentless conflict has ravaged cities and villages alike, leading to widespread violence, hunger, disease, and death. The nation’s landscape bears the scars of destruction, and its people are enduring unimaginable suffering.

In a visit to Sudan in October 2024, Ted Chaiban, assistant secretary-general of the United Nations and deputy executive director of UNICEF, witnessed the profound scale of the crisis firsthand. He described it as one of the most severe humanitarian crises in living memory. “Sudan and its plight are becoming increasingly forgotten,” Chaiban noted, emphasizing the urgent need for renewed international focus and assistance.

The diminishing global attention has exacerbated the situation, leaving millions of Sudanese without adequate support. Humanitarian agencies are overwhelmed, and resources are dwindling as the world’s gaze shifts elsewhere. The cries for help from Sudan’s beleaguered population grow louder, yet echo in the void of global indifference.

As the conflict shows no signs of abating, there is an urgent call for the international community to re-engage with Sudan’s crisis. The suffering of millions hangs in the balance, reliant on the world’s willingness to remember and act.

Sudan’s unfolding tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of inattention. It is a plea for solidarity, compassion, and decisive action to alleviate the suffering and help restore peace in a nation yearning for hope amidst the turmoil.
