HTS Leader Vows Syria Will Not Threaten Arab Neighbors

Ahmad al-Shara, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has pledged that Syria will no longer pose a threat to other Arab nations and expressed a desire to emulate Gulf countries in boosting economic growth. In a recent interview with the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, al-Shara, also known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, emphasized a commitment to regional stability and development.

“We won’t allow Syria to attack or unsettle any Arab or Gulf country,” al-Shara stated, underscoring a shift from past conflicts. He acknowledged the end of “the revolutionary period” following the fall of the previous government and outlined his administration’s focus on fostering constructive ties with neighboring states.

Al-Shara highlighted ongoing nationwide dialogues aimed at drafting a new constitution, signaling a move towards political restructuring. While he did not provide specific details about the constitutional process, he stressed the importance of inclusive discussions to shape Syria’s future.

The HTS leader expressed admiration for the development models of Gulf nations, indicating a willingness to adopt similar strategies to revitalize Syria’s economy. “We hope to follow in the footsteps of our Gulf neighbors to achieve economic growth and prosperity,” he said.

Al-Shara’s remarks come at a critical juncture for Syria, as the country seeks to rebuild after years of conflict. His statements suggest a potential shift in regional dynamics, with an emphasis on peace, cooperation, and economic development.
