On Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Zhang Ming and Nurlan Yermekbayev, the incoming SCO secretary-general, in Beijing. Wang Yi emphasized that China will continue to provide support and assistance to the secretary-general and the work of the Secretariat.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, commended Zhang Ming for his significant contributions to the development and growth of the SCO. He congratulated Yermekbayev on his upcoming role and expressed confidence in the future of the organization.
“Over the past three years, under the leadership of the heads of member states and the joint efforts of all parties, the SCO has forged ahead with determination, enhancing cooperation and growing stronger,” Wang Yi stated.
Noting that China currently holds the rotating presidency of the SCO, Wang Yi affirmed China’s commitment to advancing the organization’s work. “China has full confidence in the bright future of the SCO and is ready to work with other member states to build it into a force stabilizing international order, a reliable source of prosperity for member states, and a harmonious home for people in the region,” he said.
Secretary-General Zhang Ming reflected on the accomplishments of the Secretariat over the past three years, attributing success to the trust and support of member states and the guidance of the Shanghai Spirit. “We have promoted practical cooperation in various fields, enhanced the international influence of the organization, and worked towards building a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for all,” Zhang said.
Yermekbayev praised China’s leading role in the development of the SCO. He pledged to fully support the work of the Chinese presidency and collaborate closely to prepare for the SCO summit next year.
