Russian Foreign Minister Warns of Nuclear Escalation Risks in Ukraine Crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has issued a stark warning about the dangers of nuclear escalation in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the catastrophic consequences that could arise from such actions.

In an interview released on Friday by American journalist Tucker Carlson on the social media platform X, Lavrov addressed a wide range of topics, including Russia-U.S. relations, the Ukraine crisis, and global geopolitical tensions.

Lavrov expressed deep concern over statements from officials within the Pentagon and NATO, who have suggested the possibility of limited nuclear strikes on Russia that wouldn’t involve U.S. territories in a nuclear conflict. He cautioned that any use of nuclear weapons could spiral out of control, leading to an uncontrollable escalation.

“Russia’s military doctrine says that the most important thing is to avoid a nuclear war,” Lavrov stated, referencing the Joint Statement of the Leaders of the Five Nuclear-Weapon States from January 2022, which declares that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”

The foreign minister reiterated Russia’s longstanding opposition to NATO’s eastward expansion, accusing Western nations of disregarding Russia’s security concerns. He urged U.S. policymakers to move away from a “rules-based order” that prioritizes U.S. dominance over multilateralism.

“Russia remains open to dialogue under equitable terms,” Lavrov concluded, signaling a willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
