Xi Jinping and Albanese Pledge Stronger China-Australia Ties at G20 Summit

On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. During their discussion, Xi emphasized that there is no fundamental conflict of interests between China and Australia.

Xi highlighted the importance of mutual respect and equality in bilateral relations, stating that as long as both sides adhere to these principles and seek common ground while setting aside differences, China-Australia relations will flourish. “Our countries have much to gain from cooperation,” Xi remarked.

The Chinese leader called for strengthened coordination and cooperation between the two nations, urging opposition to protectionism. He noted that both China and Australia are staunch supporters and defenders of economic globalization and free trade. “By promoting openness, we can share opportunities and benefits among various countries, achieving common development,” Xi said.

Xi expressed his readiness to work with Australia to build a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership. He believes that enhancing China-Australia ties will inject greater stability and certainty into the region and the world.

Reflecting on his in-depth communication with Albanese in Beijing last November, Xi observed that over the past year, the two countries have maintained close communication and exchanges at all levels. He commended the positive progress made in implementing the important consensus reached between the two leaders.

Xi also pointed out that more than 250 Australian companies participated in this year’s China International Import Expo—a record high. He described this participation as a “vote of confidence” by Australian businesses in China’s economy and the cooperative relationship between the two nations.

Looking ahead, Xi emphasized the need to expand mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation. He expressed China’s willingness to import more quality Australian products and encouraged Chinese companies to invest and do business in Australia. Xi also hoped that Australia would provide a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises.
