The upcoming G20 Summit, set to take place from November 18 to 20 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aims to navigate the turbulent international landscape and address complex challenges in global governance. As nations prepare for this significant event, a recent global poll highlights China’s pivotal role in championing the interests of the Global South.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the responsibility of G20 members, stating, “All G20 members should take the responsibility inherent in being major international and regional players, and should lead by example in promoting development of all nations, improving the well-being for the whole mankind, and advancing progress of the entire world.” This vision resonates with many worldwide, as evidenced by a CGTN poll where a vast majority of respondents agreed with President Xi’s sentiments.
The poll reveals that 80.9 percent of participants view the G20 as a crucial platform for strengthening multilateral cooperation and sharing development opportunities. There’s a strong call for collaborative efforts to tackle global uncertainties and challenges, particularly impacting countries in the Global South. Notably, 67.1 percent of respondents hope the G20 Summit will focus on addressing the development needs of these nations, enhancing their role and influence on the international stage.
Environmental concerns also feature prominently, with 73.4 percent expecting G20 members to actively promote international cooperation on climate governance. This underscores a collective desire for a green transition in the global economy, an issue of significant importance to many Global South countries.
As the largest developing country and a key member of the Global South, China has been instrumental in advocating for these nations. China’s commitment is evident through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, partnering with over 150 countries to foster development, and the Global Development Initiative in collaboration with more than 100 countries and international organizations, including the United Nations.
China’s support extends to structural changes in global forums; it was the first country to openly endorse the African Union’s inclusion in the G20. By promoting inclusivity and shared growth, China is working to ensure that the voices of developing nations are heard and their interests represented.
An online commenter, @Shining237, aptly captured this sentiment: “China is setting a new bar for the world to follow.” As the G20 Summit approaches, the global community watches closely, hopeful that collective action will pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable future.
