BRICS Nations Advocate for Fairer Global Governance Reform

“The collective rise of Emerging Markets and Developing Countries represented by BRICS is fundamentally changing the global landscape,” stated Chinese President Xi Jinping. “Whatever resistance there may be, BRICS, a positive and stable force for good, will continue to grow.”

A recent survey conducted by CGTN in cooperation with Renmin University of China and through the New Era Institute of International Communication gathered insights from 1,634 respondents across BRICS countries. The findings reveal a strong consensus on the need for reforms in global governance structures to establish a more equitable international order.

Development Demands Refuse to Be Ignored

In an era where economic globalization faces significant challenges, conflicts between multilateralism and unilateralism, fairness and hegemony are becoming more pronounced. The widening development gap between the Global North and South underscores the deep-rooted contradictions within an international order dominated by a handful of developed nations. This has heightened the BRICS nations’ aspiration to promote a new international order that is fairer and more reasonable.

Survey Highlights Urgent Calls for Reform

An overwhelming 96.2% of survey respondents believe that all countries should participate equally in international affairs to collaboratively establish a balanced international system. Additionally, 72.6% support necessary reforms to current international rules, which are primarily dominated by developed countries. Notably, 83.9% of respondents urge the United Nations to pay greater attention to the interests and demands of “Global South” countries.

When asked about the main aspects of the international order in need of urgent reform:

  • 63.6% called for increased transparency in the decision-making processes of international organizations.
  • 60.2% demanded greater representation and voice for developing countries in international affairs.
  • 56.8% emphasized the need for all countries to respect the authority of international law.
  • 55.9% advocated for institutions like the UN Security Council to strengthen international cooperation and coordination.

Furthermore, significant portions of respondents:

  • Opposed the use of military sanctions against other countries (49.6%).
  • Hoped to narrow the North-South gap through international aid, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer (48.7%).
  • Urged a reduction in trade barriers and protectionist measures (45.8%).

A Collective Vision for the Future

The survey results highlight the BRICS nations’ collective desire for a more inclusive and equitable global governance system. As emerging economies continue to grow and exert greater influence, their calls for reform reflect a commitment to multilateralism and shared development.

President Xi’s remarks encapsulate this sentiment, emphasizing the unstoppable momentum of BRICS as a positive force on the global stage. The unity and cooperation among BRICS countries signal a transformative shift toward a future where the voices of all nations are heard, and the benefits of globalization are shared equitably.
