Chinese Disarmament Ambassador Shen Jian on Monday highlighted unprecedented challenges facing international nuclear disarmament due to a lack of strategic trust among major powers, escalating geopolitical tensions, and regional conflicts.
Speaking at the 79th UN General Assembly’s First Committee on nuclear disarmament, Shen urged nations to collaborate in reducing nuclear risks, promoting disarmament, and preventing nuclear proliferation to safeguard global peace and security.
The envoy emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate regional tensions and achieve rapid ceasefires. He called for a significant reduction in the role of nuclear weapons in national security policies, an end to the forward deployment of strategic forces, and adherence to a pragmatic and feasible approach to nuclear disarmament.
Shen also stressed the importance of addressing nuclear transparency issues objectively and rationally, while enhancing international non-proliferation efforts. He pointed out that effectively tackling the substantial risks and challenges in the nuclear arena requires comprehensive solutions.
He cautioned that clinging to Cold War mindsets, amplifying major power rivalries, and provoking bloc confrontations would only lead the international nuclear arms control process into a dead end.
The ambassador stated that China advocates for the international community to embrace the vision of “common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security.” He urged a commitment to genuine multilateralism, respect for each other’s legitimate security concerns, and a collaborative effort to advance the international nuclear arms control agenda.
