Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Laurent Fabius, president of the Constitutional Council of France, in Beijing on Monday. The meeting underscored the enduring relationship between China and France, as both nations pledged to strengthen ties and uphold shared values.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the continuously high-standard development of China-France relations. He emphasized that both countries uphold independence and align with the global trend towards multipolarity, contributing significantly to world peace and stability.
“China firmly supports free trade and is committed to safeguarding the global trading system,” Wang Yi remarked during the meeting. He acknowledged recent setbacks in economic and trade relations between China and the European Union, noting that they are not in the interest of either side. Wang urged the EU to prioritize long-term and overall interests and to seek solutions to mutual concerns through negotiation and consultation with China.
Laurent Fabius reaffirmed France’s diplomatic tradition of upholding independence and expressed the enduring friendship between France and China. “France has consistently opposed coercive measures and supports finding solutions through dialogue and consultation,” Fabius stated, signaling a commitment to collaborative problem-solving.
The two leaders also exchanged views on international issues of mutual concern, including the Ukraine crisis and efforts to combat climate change. Their discussions underscored the importance of cooperation between China and France in addressing global challenges.
