Putin Highlights Mutual Respect in China-Russia Relations Ahead of Expanded BRICS Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized the foundation of mutual respect in the strengthening ties between the Chinese mainland and Russia. Speaking in Moscow on Friday during a meeting with representatives of leading media outlets from BRICS countries, including CGTN representing Chinese media, Putin highlighted the rapid growth in bilateral trade built on equality and mutual benefit.

“This is not an empty phrase, but the reality of our cooperation,” Putin stated, underscoring the commitment of both nations to listen to each other and safeguard each other’s interests. He credited the balanced trade structure to the joint efforts of both sides, noting, “Our focus is not just on discussions; we take action.”

Looking ahead, Putin outlined plans for continued cooperation in energy, agriculture, infrastructure, and science and technology. He emphasized Russia’s intent to enhance energy exports to China, including oil and natural gas, and to expand agricultural collaboration.

The meeting comes ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, marking the first gathering since the group’s expansion from five to ten members. Effective January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will join Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as BRICS members.

Addressing the expansion, Putin expressed enthusiasm about the inclusion of new members, stating that each country brings unique cultural and economic strengths. “When new participants join any international organization, they make their own contributions,” he said. Putin highlighted the potential for expanded cooperation not only in the economy but also in culture, film, youth, and people-to-people exchanges.

Commenting on external attempts to contain China’s development, Putin asserted that such efforts cannot hinder China’s progress, which he described as an objective process driven by various factors. He cautioned that strategies aimed at restraining China’s growth could negatively impact the economies of those attempting them, potentially rendering sectors uncompetitive.

During the session, Putin also addressed questions on other global issues, including the situation in Ukraine and the dynamics of the international financial system.
