The expansion of BRICS is shaping the global landscape, empowering the Global South to voice its aspirations for a more equitable international order. The inclusion of new members reflects the growing influence of developing nations on the world stage.
“In recent years, the Global South has become a significant force economically. However, their international status and influence have not matched this rise, which is deeply unjust,” said Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs and the Center for European Studies at Renmin University of China.
The 2024 BRICS Summit is set to take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. This will be the first meeting since BRICS expanded its membership at the beginning of the year. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia joined the bloc on January 1, alongside existing members China, Russia, Brazil, India, and South Africa.
With over 40 countries expressing interest or formally applying to join BRICS, the bloc’s growing influence signifies a shift towards a multipolar world. The expansion demonstrates the Global South’s commitment to collaboration and its desire for a more balanced global power structure.
