Chinese Ambassador Calls for Courage to Advance China-U.S. Ties

In a significant address at the 2024 Gala Dinner of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR) on Tuesday, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng urged both nations to “pool their wisdom” and work collaboratively to advance China-U.S. relations.

“To take the China-U.S. relationship forward, it is important to tackle challenges with greater courage,” Xie emphasized, highlighting the necessity of confronting obstacles head-on to foster a stronger bilateral relationship.

Xie reflected on the longstanding history between the two countries, noting that cooperation has historically led to “win-win outcomes” and contributed to global peace and stability. “The right thing to do is to explore the right way to get along, featuring mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,” he stated.

Addressing the sensitive issue of Taiwan, Xie reiterated that Taiwan is an integral part of China. He stressed that safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait requires upholding the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, firmly rejecting “Taiwan independence.”

The ambassador also expressed deep appreciation for the NCUSCR’s contributions since its founding in 1966, during a time when the two nations were estranged. “Although China-U.S. relations are still facing grave challenges, those who keep caring for and supporting the relationship always abound,” he acknowledged.

Xie’s remarks come at a pivotal moment as both countries navigate complex geopolitical challenges. His call for courage and collaboration highlights a mutual desire to find common ground and strengthen ties for the benefit of both nations and the international community.
