The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) is poised for a significant political milestone as it prepares to hold its sixth-term chief executive election on Sunday morning at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex.
On Saturday, Macao SAR Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng visited the polling station to inspect the final preparations. Accompanied by officials, he reviewed the arrangements and received a report from Song Man Lei, president of the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) for the Chief Executive Election.
Ho emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, stating that it reflects the recent amendments made to the Chief Executive Election Law to further implement the principle of \"patriots administering Macao.\" He urged the EAC to ensure that all aspects of the election process are meticulously organized to uphold its integrity.
\"The election is particularly significant as it demonstrates the results of our legislative efforts,\" Ho remarked. \"It's essential that we maintain a smooth and orderly process to reflect the will of the people and the principles we've enshrined in our laws.\"
Song Man Lei assured that the commission has been diligently preparing for the election. \"All arrangements are now ready to ensure smooth operations on election day,\" she said, highlighting that the polling station is equipped with 32 voting booths and 8 ballot boxes to accommodate all 400 members of the Chief Executive Election Committee.
Polling is set to begin at 10 a.m., with votes to be counted and announced immediately after voting concludes. Sam Hou Fai, who previously received 386 nominations from the committee members, is the sole candidate running for election. His candidacy signifies a broad consensus among the election committee members.
According to the Macao SAR Basic Law, the chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and is then appointed by the Central People's Government. The elected chief executive will serve a five-year term, leading the Macao SAR in its continued development and integration with national initiatives.
