The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) is set to hold its sixth-term chief executive election, with preparations complete for the significant event scheduled for Sunday morning at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex.
On Saturday, Macao SAR Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng visited the polling station to oversee the final arrangements and received a briefing from Song Man Lei, president of the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) for the Chief Executive Election.
Chief Executive Ho highlighted the importance of this election, noting that amendments made to the Chief Executive Election Law last year aim to further implement the principle of “patriots administering Macao.” He emphasized that the election will reflect the outcomes of these legislative changes and urged the EAC to ensure all aspects of the election process are meticulously organized.
Song Man Lei confirmed that the commission has been actively preparing and that all measures are in place to guarantee a smooth election day. “All arrangements are now ready to ensure smooth operations on election day,” she stated.
The polling station is equipped with 32 voting booths and 8 ballot boxes to accommodate all 400 members of the Chief Executive Election Committee. Voting is set to begin at 10 a.m., and votes will be counted and results announced immediately after the polls close.
Sam Hou Fai, who previously secured 386 nominations from the Chief Executive Election Committee, is the sole candidate in the running. His candidacy underscores a streamlined election process within the SAR’s political framework.
According to the Macao SAR Basic Law, the chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and is appointed by the Central People’s Government. The position carries a five-year term, during which the chief executive leads the region’s administration and represents Macao both domestically and internationally.
