China and Laos Pledge to Strengthen Development Cooperation

In a significant move to bolster regional ties, Chinese Premier Li Qiang has reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Laos. During his official visit to Laos on Saturday, Premier Li met with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, where they discussed enhancing the synergy of their countries’ development strategies.

“China is ready to work with Laos to unlock new opportunities for mutual success,” Premier Li stated. “By promoting the expansion and improvement of economic and trade cooperation, we can explore more converging interests that benefit both our nations.”

Emphasizing the importance of their relationship, Li noted that China places its relations with Laos as a priority in its neighborhood diplomacy. He expressed a desire to deepen political mutual trust and uphold mutual support on issues concerning each country’s core interests. “We aim to build a more solid, dynamic, and effective China-Laos community with a shared future,” he added.

Premier Li highlighted areas for potential collaboration, including increased imports of high-quality agricultural products from Laos. He also called for strengthened exchanges in medicine, education, media, and cultural tourism to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries.

The Chinese premier expressed willingness to enhance coordination within multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework. He emphasized the implementation of global initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.

Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone responded positively, stating, “Laos stands ready to work closely with China to expand cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, infrastructure, and the digital economy.” He also highlighted the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges to deepen mutual understanding.

“We are committed to upholding mutual support on global and regional affairs and safeguarding our strategic interests,” Sonexay added. “Together, we can promote the continuous upgrading of building a Laos-China community with a shared future.”

The two sides concluded the meeting by issuing a joint statement, underscoring their commitment to collaborative development and regional stability.
