China Urges Somali Parties to Resolve Differences Through Dialogue

At the United Nations Security Council briefing on Somalia on Thursday, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dai Bing, called on all Somali parties to strengthen dialogue and unity to resolve their differences. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum achieved in recent years and urged continued commitment to peaceful dialogue.

“At this important stage, the support and assistance of the international community cannot relax,” Dai stated, highlighting the critical transition period of both UN and African Union missions in Somalia. He noted Somalia’s significant progress in national reconstruction, peace, and security, emphasizing the need to consolidate these gains.

Dai Bing underscored three key points: maintaining political stability, strengthening the foundation of security transition, and advancing the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) transition in an orderly manner. He commended the Somali federal government’s efforts to communicate with federal member states, reaching important consensus on the constitution, elections, and political parties.

“We expect all Somali parties to keep up the momentum, strengthen dialogue and unity, and stay committed to resolving differences through dialogue,” Dai said. He reaffirmed China’s consistent support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to assist Somalia in exploring a development path suited to its national conditions.

Dai stressed that providing guarantees for Somalia to embark on a path of long-term and stable development is crucial. He urged global partners to continue their support, ensuring that Somalia’s progress towards peace and stability remains uninterrupted.
