UNGA President Urges Immediate Middle East Ceasefire as General Debate Ends

As the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) concluded its General Debate on Monday, UNGA President Philemon Yang delivered a passionate plea for peace in the Middle East. Addressing member states, Yang urged Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah to urgently agree to a ceasefire amid escalating tensions that threaten to engulf the entire region in war.

“In the past few days, we have witnessed an extremely dramatic escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon,” Yang remarked. “As we speak, peace in the Middle East is hanging delicately on a shoestring! There is pervasive tension and uncertainty in the region.”

Yang warned that continued hostilities risk triggering an all-out war in the volatile Middle East, a situation the world must strive to prevent. He called upon all parties with influence to demand an immediate ceasefire and engage in dialogue to resolve the conflicts peacefully.

“The world must not allow an all-out war to happen in this volatile region,” he stressed. “I urge all states supplying weapons to the region to desist from such actions and give peace a chance.”

Yang’s closing speech underscored the urgent need for international cooperation to de-escalate tensions and foster stability in the Middle East. His call to action serves as a reminder of the critical role global unity plays in addressing conflicts and promoting peace.
