The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities’ pursuit of “militarization” will not enhance security in the Taiwan region but will only heighten the risk of conflict, a spokesperson for the Chinese mainland stated on Monday.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, expressed strong opposition to any form of military engagement between the United States and the Taiwan region. “Beijing firmly opposes any form of military engagement between the U.S. and China’s Taiwan region,” Chen said.
His remarks followed the U.S. approval of $567 million in military aid to the Taiwan region on Sunday. The aid package has been seen by Beijing as a provocative move that undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
“In the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, the U.S. made serious commitments regarding the Taiwan question,” Chen noted. “However, recent actions by the U.S. encourage reckless ‘Taiwan independence’ moves and jeopardize peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
Chen urged the United States to sincerely adhere to the one-China principle and the three joint communiques, cease arms sales to the Taiwan region, and stop sending wrong signals to forces advocating for “Taiwan independence.”
“No matter how many weapons the DPP authorities obtain from the U.S., they cannot shake Beijing’s firm resolve to achieve national reunification,” Chen added, reaffirming the mainland’s stance on the Taiwan question.
The ongoing tensions highlight the complexities surrounding cross-strait relations and the significant impact of international involvement in the region’s security dynamics.
