China and South Korea Pledge to Strengthen Cooperation Amid Regional Challenges

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met in New York on Saturday, calling for enhanced cooperation to address shared risks and challenges.

Since 2024, exchanges and cooperation between China and South Korea in various fields have become more active, showing positive signs of improvement in bilateral relations, according to Wang Yi. He emphasized that as long as both sides adhere to the original intent of establishing diplomatic ties, remain committed to a friendly direction, and pursue mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, the relationship can continue to develop in a healthy and forward-looking manner.

“As close neighbors and important cooperation partners, China and South Korea should create favorable conditions for their respective development and the development of bilateral relations,” Wang Yi said.

Addressing regional security concerns, Wang Yi noted that the deployment of U.S. intermediate-range missiles in the region undermines peace and stability, not serving the interests of regional countries. He stressed that war and chaos must not occur on the Korean Peninsula, and maintaining peace and stability is in the common interest of all parties. “China will continue to mediate and promote talks, playing a constructive role in achieving long-term peace and stability on the Peninsula,” he stated.

Cho Tae-yul expressed hope that both sides can maintain the positive momentum, strengthen high-level exchanges, and promote the stable development of bilateral relations. He affirmed South Korea’s willingness to enhance economic and trade cooperation with China and jointly promote regional economic integration.

“South Korea is highly concerned about the situation on the Korean Peninsula and looks forward to maintaining strategic communication with China,” Cho said.
