China and South Korea Pledge Closer Cooperation Amid Regional Challenges

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul in New York on Saturday, calling for joint efforts to address regional risks and challenges. The meeting highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between China and South Korea.

Wang Yi noted that since 2024, exchanges and cooperation between the two countries have become more active, showing positive signs of improvement. He emphasized that as long as both sides adhere to the original intent of establishing diplomatic ties, remain committed to a friendly direction, and pursue mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, China-South Korea relations can continue to develop in a healthy and forward-looking manner.

“As close neighbors and important cooperation partners, China and South Korea should create favorable conditions for their respective development and the development of bilateral relations,” Wang said.

Addressing security concerns, Wang Yi expressed that the deployment of U.S. intermediate-range missiles in the region undermines peace and stability and does not serve the interests of regional countries. He stressed that war and chaos must not occur on the Korean Peninsula and that maintaining peace and stability is in the common interest of all parties. China, he added, will continue to mediate and promote talks, playing a constructive role in achieving long-term peace and stability on the Peninsula.

Cho Tae-yul responded by expressing hope that both sides can maintain the positive momentum, strengthen high-level exchanges, and promote the stable development of bilateral relations. He indicated that South Korea is willing to enhance economic and trade cooperation with China and jointly promote regional economic integration.

“South Korea is highly concerned about the situation on the Korean Peninsula and looks forward to maintaining strategic communication with China,” Cho said.
