In a significant move to strengthen bilateral ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul in New York on Saturday. The two leaders called for enhanced cooperation to address regional risks and challenges, signaling a commitment to foster stability and prosperity in the region.

Wang Yi highlighted the positive momentum in China-South Korea relations since 2024, noting that exchanges and cooperation in various fields have become more active. “As close neighbors and important cooperation partners, China and South Korea should create favorable conditions for their respective development and the development of bilateral relations,” Wang stated.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to the original intent of establishing diplomatic ties and pursuing mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. “It is believed that the China-South Korea relationship can continue to develop in a healthy and forward-looking manner,” he added.

Addressing regional security concerns, Wang Yi expressed opposition to the deployment of U.S. intermediate-range missiles in the region, stating that it undermines regional peace and stability and does not serve the interests of regional countries. He underscored that war and chaos must not occur on the Korean Peninsula and that maintaining peace and stability is in the common interest of all parties. “China will continue to mediate and promote talks, playing a constructive role in achieving long-term peace and stability on the Peninsula,” Wang said.

Cho Tae-yul expressed hope for maintaining the positive momentum in bilateral relations. “We hope to strengthen high-level exchanges and promote the stable development of bilateral relations,” he said. Cho affirmed South Korea’s willingness to enhance economic and trade cooperation with China and jointly promote regional economic integration.

“South Korea is highly concerned about the situation on the Korean Peninsula and looks forward to maintaining strategic communication with China,” Cho added.

The meeting between Wang Yi and Cho Tae-yul reflects a shared commitment to navigate regional challenges through dialogue and cooperation. As both nations seek to bolster their partnership, their collaborative efforts are expected to contribute significantly to regional stability and economic growth.
