Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for renewed efforts to consolidate and develop the unity of the Chinese nation. Speaking at a ceremony in Beijing on Friday, Xi emphasized the importance of fostering a strong sense of national community among all ethnic groups.
The event honored 352 groups and 368 individuals recognized as role models for ethnic unity and progress. President Xi, along with other senior leaders, presented awards to representatives of these groups and individuals.
Highlighting the achievements of the Communist Party of China (CPC) over the past century, Xi noted that the Party has successfully navigated ethnic affairs through a distinctly Chinese approach. This path has led to significant advancements in ethnic relations, promoting equality, solidarity, mutual assistance, and harmony among all ethnic groups.
Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation has been central to the Party’s work in ethnic affairs, resulting in historic successes. Xi underscored key aspects of this approach, including maximizing cohesion, adhering to equality, opposing ethnic oppression and discrimination, and balancing national unity with regional ethnic autonomy.
“The formation and development of the Chinese national community is the will of the people, the trend of the times, and a historical inevitability,” Xi stated. He urged all ethnic groups to firmly embrace the concept of a unified Chinese nation.
President Xi also emphasized the importance of education in patriotism, collectivism, and socialism, particularly among the youth. He called for fully promoting the use of the standard Chinese language to strengthen national identity.
In advancing Chinese modernization and achieving common prosperity, Xi stressed that no ethnic group should be left behind. He advocated for high-quality development in areas with large ethnic minority populations and encouraged stronger economic ties and increased exchanges among regions and ethnic groups.
Xi concluded by emphasizing that ethnic affairs must be handled according to the law. He called on Party committees and governments at all levels to prioritize ethnic affairs and foster a supportive social environment for related work.
