Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday called upon the United Nations Security Council to play a mediating role in the ongoing Ukraine crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for peace and stability. Speaking at a high-level meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, Wang urged all parties to prioritize dialogue and negotiations to end the conflict.
“Every additional day of the crisis brings more suffering to the people, more destruction to the region, and more instability to the world,” Wang stated. “This situation is unsustainable and must be reversed with all possible efforts.”
The Ukraine crisis, now in its third year, continues to escalate with increasing civilian casualties and intensifying spillover effects. Wang highlighted the immediate need to adhere to three principles: preventing the conflict from expanding beyond the battlefield, avoiding further escalation, and refraining from actions that fuel the conflict.
He stressed the importance of the international community seizing the current opportunity to promote peace and dialogue. “Calls for peace and negotiations have been growing internationally, with more and more countries from the Global South uniting in an effort to create an atmosphere conducive to peace and to accumulate the necessary conditions for it,” Wang noted.
Wang also cautioned against using the crisis as an excuse to impose illegal unilateral sanctions, disrupt normal economic and trade relations, or create exclusive blocs that divide the world. He called on the global community to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as energy, finance, trade, food security, and the protection of vital infrastructure like oil and gas pipelines.
“The immediate priority is to heighten awareness of the crisis and reduce tensions,” Wang emphasized. He urged all parties to be genuinely committed to promoting negotiations and facilitating dialogue, placing peace and the well-being of people at the forefront.
