Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday urged Japan to collaborate with China to promote the sound and stable development of bilateral relations. Meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa in New York, Wang emphasized the shared responsibility of both countries to advance strategic and mutually beneficial relations.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, highlighted the importance of grasping the correct direction of China-Japan ties.

Kamikawa expressed Japan’s commitment to maintaining communication and dialogue with China in all fields and at all levels, including negotiations to resolve issues related to the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water. She stressed the need for joint efforts to safeguard regional peace and development.

Addressing concerns over an attack on a Japanese student in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, Kamikawa hoped China would handle the incident appropriately and ensure the safety of Japanese residents in China.

Wang reiterated China’s opposition to Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea. He urged Japan to adhere to its commitment to accept long-term international monitoring and independent sampling by China and other stakeholders.

Regarding the incident in Shenzhen, Wang assured that China would investigate and handle the matter in accordance with the law, ensuring the safety of all foreign citizens in China. He called on Japan to approach the incident calmly and rationally, avoiding politicization and amplification.
