China’s Wang Yi Condemns Attacks on Lebanese Civilians in Meeting with Foreign Minister

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib in New York on Monday, affirming China’s strong support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and security. In a clear stance against escalating violence, Wang condemned the recent attacks on Lebanese civilians and called for a permanent ceasefire.

China Reaffirms Support for Lebanon’s Sovereignty

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China, emphasized China’s commitment to justice and its unwavering support for Arab allies, including Lebanon. “Regardless of changing circumstances, China will consistently stand on the side of justice,” Wang stated, highlighting the importance of maintaining Lebanon’s national dignity.

Condemnation of Attacks on Civilians

Expressing deep concern over recent incidents in Lebanon, Wang condemned the indiscriminate attacks that have led to significant civilian casualties. He specifically denounced the large-scale airstrikes conducted by Israel, stating that such actions violate fundamental principles of international relations and warrant strong condemnation.

Urging International Community for Action

Wang reiterated that violence would only exacerbate the humanitarian situation. He urged the international community to adopt a clearer stance and called for regional solidarity to amplify support for peace initiatives. Outlining China’s position, Wang advocated for a “permanent ceasefire and complete troop withdrawal” and emphasized the effective implementation of a “two-state solution” as essential steps towards resolving the ongoing conflict.

Lebanon’s Response

Bou Habib expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding friendship and support. He acknowledged China’s crucial role in advocating for justice on the international stage and defending the rights of developing countries. “Maintaining sovereignty and independence is vital for small nations like Lebanon, especially within the framework of the United Nations,” Bou Habib remarked.

Highlighting the severe challenges Lebanon currently faces, Bou Habib mentioned that over 300 fatalities have been reported due to recent airstrikes. He stressed the urgent need for international solidarity and support to address the humanitarian crisis.

Protection of Chinese Nationals

Wang expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Arab nations and the international community, underscoring the importance of promoting peace and stability in the region. He also called on the Lebanese government to take effective measures to protect Chinese citizens residing in Lebanon.

In response, Bou Habib assured Wang that Lebanon would make every effort to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in the country. He expressed appreciation for China’s commitment to justice and its support during these challenging times.

The meeting between Wang and Bou Habib signifies a strengthening of ties between China and Lebanon, as both nations seek collaborative solutions to promote regional peace and address humanitarian concerns.
