China Pledges Stronger Ties with Maldives: Wang Yi Meets President Muizzu in New York

In a noteworthy development aimed at enhancing regional cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday in New York. Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, expressed China’s readiness to advance bilateral relations with the Maldives to new levels.

Recalling the successful state visit by President Muizzu to China in January, Wang Yi highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations. During that visit, the heads of state announced the elevation of their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and committed to building a community with a shared future.

“China and the Maldives have always understood, trusted, and supported each other,” Wang Yi remarked. “Despite the many uncertainties in the region and around the world, our bilateral ties have remained steady and healthy.”

Under the strategic guidance of their leaders, China and the Maldives have engaged in close exchanges at all levels, promoting practical cooperation that brings tangible benefits to the Maldivian people. Wang Yi emphasized China’s willingness to work with the Maldives to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, continuously promoting the relationship to new heights.

Wang Yi noted that China’s development would enhance the force for peace globally and strengthen the position of developing countries, offering new opportunities for nations like the Maldives. He stated that China-Maldives relations serve as an example of how countries, big and small, can treat each other as equals, support one another, and strive for mutual benefits and win-win results.

“China will always support the Maldives in protecting its sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national dignity,” Wang Yi assured. “We support the Maldives in pursuing a development path that suits its national realities.”

Addressing the challenges faced by small island nations, Wang Yi mentioned China’s willingness to lend support through the Global Development Initiative. He expressed China’s readiness to work alongside the Maldives in coping with global challenges such as climate change.
