Iran and Cuba Unite Against U.S. Sanctions at UN General Assembly

Iran and Cuba have reaffirmed their mutual support in confronting what they describe as the United States’ “hostile” policies and sanctions. The pledge was made during a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Sunday, Araghchi condemned the U.S. decision to designate Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, a list that also includes Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), and Syria. He labeled the move as “unilateral and political,” viewing it as part of Washington’s ongoing “hostile” policies toward nations challenging its influence.

“Iran, as a victim of U.S. sanctions, fully understands the hardships faced by the Cuban people,” Araghchi stated. “We stand in solidarity with Cuba and support their resilience against unjust embargoes.”

Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing Cuba’s support for Iran in resisting U.S. pressure. “Our countries have long suffered under unwarranted sanctions,” he said. “By standing together, we strengthen our ability to overcome these challenges.”

The two ministers discussed enhancing bilateral relations and explored avenues for cooperation to mitigate the impact of sanctions on their economies and people. Both Iran and Cuba have faced decades of U.S. sanctions, which have significantly affected their international trade and economic development.

Their meeting highlights a continued effort by sanctioned nations to build alliances and seek collective strategies to counteract economic pressures. The collaboration between Iran and Cuba is seen as a move to assert their independence on the global stage and to rally international support against unilateral sanctions.

The 79th UN General Assembly provided a platform for these discussions, bringing attention to the broader implications of sanctions on innocent civilians and the importance of multilateralism in addressing global issues.
