China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, met with Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Nurlanbek Shakiev on Friday in Beijing, emphasizing the importance of enhancing exchanges and deepening pragmatic cooperation between the two nations.

Zhao, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, highlighted that under the strategic guidance of their respective leaders, China and Kyrgyzstan have achieved leapfrog development in their bilateral relations. “Our comprehensive strategic partnership has reached a new high in this new era,” he stated.

He expressed China’s readiness to work closely with Kyrgyzstan to implement the important consensus reached by their heads of state. “We aim to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation across all fronts and jointly build a China-Kyrgyzstan community with a shared future, featuring good neighborliness and shared prosperity,” Zhao said.

Amid the complex international and regional situations, Zhao called for enhanced cooperation to jointly safeguard the security and development interests of both countries. He affirmed China’s steadfast support for Kyrgyzstan in protecting its national sovereignty, security, and development interests.

Zhao proposed that both sides tap deeper into potential cooperation areas, especially in traditional sectors. He encouraged efforts to expand economic and trade cooperation, promote the exchange of scientific and innovation achievements, and improve connectivity. “The construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway should commence as soon as possible,” he added.

On legislative collaboration, Zhao noted that the NPC is willing to strengthen exchanges with the Kyrgyz parliament. He suggested enhancing communication between high-level members of legislatures, specialized committees, and friendly groups. “By engaging in mutual learning in foreign-related rule-of-law construction and other fields, we can better coordinate within multilateral frameworks such as the China-Central Asia mechanism and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” he said.

During the talks, Zhao briefed Shakiev on China’s people’s congress system. He expressed a willingness to exchange experiences in democracy and rule-of-law construction with Kyrgyzstan, based on mutual respect for each other’s development paths and political systems, to better serve their respective national developments.
