In a significant move towards fostering global environmental sustainability, the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Norway have issued a joint statement establishing a Dialogue on the Green Transition. The announcement was made on Tuesday during Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store’s official visit to China, commemorating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During the visit from September 9 to 11, 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang met with Prime Minister Store to discuss collaborative efforts in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. The newly established dialogue aims to facilitate cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving biodiversity, and creating new green industries and jobs.
The dialogue will encompass existing areas of cooperation and introduce new initiatives conducive to expediting the green transition. Key areas of focus include:
- Efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change
- Just, equitable, and orderly transition to renewable energy and low-emission solutions
- Sustainable, nature-based solutions to store greenhouse gases and restore biodiversity
- Sustainable ocean management and green shipping
- Addressing plastic pollution and implementing international instruments related to plastic pollution
- Promoting circular economy and sustainable green value chains
The cooperation will involve relevant authorities, businesses, and organizations, aligning with mutual interests and resources under their respective responsibilities. Specific thematic dialogues may be held regularly to deepen discussions on these critical issues. Additionally, the dialogue will strengthen contacts on multilateral processes of mutual interest.
Every two years, a meeting coordinated by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs from both countries will review progress and set new targets for the dialogue, ensuring continued commitment to environmental sustainability and the green transition.
