Chinese Premier Li Qiang held talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is on an official visit to China, in Beijing on Monday. The meeting marks a significant step in strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year.
Premier Li emphasized China’s readiness to work with Spain to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries. He highlighted the importance of building political mutual trust and jointly focusing on strategic bilateral relations. Li expressed China’s willingness to expand two-way opening up with Spain, encouraging the development of cross-border e-commerce and convenient logistics to promote bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
Li also pointed out that China aims to provide more facilitation and support for Spanish and other foreign enterprises investing in China. He expressed hope that Spain would offer a fair, safe, non-discriminatory, and predictable business environment for Chinese enterprises keen to invest in Spain. Additionally, he proposed focusing on green development and innovation, strengthening cooperation in new energy, energy conservation, environmental protection, the digital economy, and space exploration.
On global economic matters, Li stated that China is ready to work with Spain to uphold openness and cooperation, safeguard the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, maintain stability and unimpeded global industrial and supply chains, and jointly build an open world economy. He expressed hope that Spain would play a constructive role in promoting China-European Union cooperation.
Prime Minister Sanchez affirmed that Spain attaches great importance to developing relations with China and looks forward to further enhancing bilateral exchanges at all levels. He expressed a desire to enrich the comprehensive strategic partnership and strengthen exchanges in culture, education, science, and technology to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
Sanchez noted that the European Union and China have broad space for cooperation and that Spain supports balanced and mutually beneficial dialogue and cooperation between the EU and China. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the multilateral trading system and jointly addressing global challenges.
Following the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of several bilateral cooperation documents in fields such as economy, culture, education, science, and technology, signaling a commitment to deepening collaboration across various sectors.
