Chinese and African leaders have called for enhanced cooperation on state governance during a high-level meeting on Thursday at the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Co-chaired by China’s top legislator Zhao Leji and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, the meeting emphasized collaboration in governance and modernization efforts between the two sides.
Zhao Leji, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, highlighted President Xi Jinping‘s recent speech. He noted that it marked a new chapter in China-Africa’s joint efforts to lead modernization in the Global South.
Zhao stressed the importance of drawing wisdom from the traditional friendship between China and Africa. He called for mutual support in exploring development paths suited to each nation’s unique conditions and encouraged the sharing of experiences in reform, opening up, development, and improving livelihoods.
Additionally, Zhao proposed the creation of a platform within the FOCAC framework for exchanging state governance experiences between China and Africa. This initiative aims to deepen understanding and cooperation in governance practices.
African leaders at the meeting expressed hope for strengthening governance exchanges with China and fostering mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors. They emphasized the potential for shared growth and development through closer ties.
