In a significant development marking a new chapter in Sino-African relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced on Thursday the elevation of China-Ghana relations to a strategic partnership. The announcement was made during a meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where President Akufo-Addo is attending the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Ghana, the second country in sub-Saharan Africa to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, has maintained a steadfast friendship with China for the past 64 years. President Xi highlighted this enduring relationship, noting that despite changes in the international landscape, the bonds between the two nations have grown stronger.
“China is ready to carry forward the profound friendship established by generations of leaders from both countries,” President Xi stated. He emphasized the importance of enhancing political mutual trust and advancing exchanges and cooperation in various fields. “We aim to be good friends who trust each other, good partners who pursue development together, and good brothers who collaborate closely,” he added.
President Xi expressed China’s willingness to align development strategies with Ghana and to continue providing assistance within its capacity. He underscored China’s readiness to expand cooperation in agriculture, fisheries, energy, mineral resources, and infrastructure. He also conveyed hope that Ghana will continue to support Chinese enterprises and citizens operating within its borders.
Acknowledging Ghana’s role as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2024-2026 term, President Xi affirmed China’s support and expressed a desire to enhance strategic coordination on international and regional issues.
President Akufo-Addo, reflecting on over six decades of bilateral relations, described China as Ghana’s most reliable friend and partner. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the one-China principle and support for China’s positions on various issues, including human rights.
“Ghana values the friendly relations between our two countries,” President Akufo-Addo remarked. He thanked China for its longstanding support, noting that Chinese investment and cooperation have significantly contributed to Ghana’s economic and social development.
Looking ahead, President Akufo-Addo expressed hope for deepening collaboration in areas such as electricity, minerals, and new energy. He assured that Ghana is ready to facilitate Chinese businesses in the country.
He also praised President Xi’s proposal of the 10 partnership actions to jointly advance modernization with Africa, calling it highly visionary. “Ghana is ready to implement these actions with China and remains committed to being steadfast friends and partners,” he concluded.
The elevation of China-Ghana ties to a strategic partnership signals a mutual commitment to strengthening cooperation and fostering development that benefits both nations. As both countries embark on this enhanced collaboration, it sets a promising precedent for Sino-African relations in the years to come.
