President Xi Jinping Meets Mozambican President, Pledges to Expand Cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi in Beijing on Wednesday, expressing China’s readiness to expand cooperation with Mozambique in various fields, including infrastructure, energy and mineral resources, agriculture, and the digital economy.

President Xi highlighted that next year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Mozambique. He expressed hope that both nations would work together to strengthen their longstanding friendship, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and enhance the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Emphasizing the outcomes of the upcoming 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Xi encouraged Mozambique to capitalize on the summit’s achievements to expand economic, trade, and investment cooperation with China. He reaffirmed China’s support for Mozambique’s industrialization and economic diversification efforts.

“China supports Mozambique in combating terrorism and maintaining national stability,” Xi stated, adding that China is ready to enhance collaboration with Mozambique on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations.

President Nyusi expressed gratitude for China’s support and affirmed Mozambique’s firm adherence to the one-China principle. He voiced support for China’s positions on issues concerning its core interests, including the Taiwan question and the South China Sea. Nyusi also expressed backing for China’s policy of “One Country, Two Systems” and opposed groundless accusations against China over issues including human rights.

“Mozambique hopes to deepen cooperation with China in fields such as economy and trade, agriculture, connectivity, and security,” Nyusi said. He praised the global initiatives and major proposals put forward by President Xi for improving global governance and expressed willingness to enhance mutual support with China on multilateral issues to promote a fairer and more reasonable international order.

During the summit, China and Mozambique are expected to sign bilateral agreements in areas including the export of pigeon peas, macadamia nuts, and cashew nuts to China, as well as cooperation in news media.

The meeting underscores the deepening ties between China and Mozambique, paving the way for strengthened cooperation and mutual prosperity in the years to come.
