Beijing, China – Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday in Beijing during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The two leaders jointly announced the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
President Xi highlighted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malawi, the two countries have experienced steady and healthy development. He emphasized the solid political mutual trust and the fruitful outcomes of mutually beneficial cooperation that have strengthened their relationship.
“China stands ready to deepen the friendly cooperation with Malawi from this new starting point to promote common development and benefit their people,” Xi stated.
He stressed that China supports Malawi in exploring a development path aligned with its national conditions and is willing to share the development opportunities brought by Chinese modernization to assist Malawi’s national development and construction.
President Xi expressed a willingness to enhance cooperation with Malawi in agriculture, telecommunications, infrastructure, and other fields, encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in Malawi.
He also called for utilizing the Confucius Institute at the University of Malawi to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
The Chinese president added that China is eager to strengthen coordination and cooperation with Malawi in international affairs to safeguard the common interests of developing countries.
This elevation to a strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in China-Malawi relations, paving the way for deeper collaboration and mutual growth.
