China Warns Philippines Amid Escalating Tensions in South China Sea

The China Coast Guard has issued a stern warning to the Philippines, urging against escalating tensions in the South China Sea after a maritime incident on Saturday. According to Chinese officials, a Philippine Navy ship “deliberately” collided with a Chinese vessel that was conducting routine operations to enforce maritime rights.

Spokesperson Liu Dejun of the China Coast Guard stated that the Philippines should “bear all responsibilities” for the incident. “We once again warn the Philippines to face reality and give up illusions. Withdrawing the ship immediately on its own is the only correct way,” Liu emphasized.

Details from Liu indicate that the Philippine Navy ship No. 9701 illegally entered Xianbin Jiao at 8:02 a.m. on Saturday and engaged in provocative maneuvers. In response, China’s navy issued warnings in accordance with law and regulations.

China has also cautioned that it may take “necessary measures” against any further provocative actions that threaten its maritime rights, underscoring its “indisputable sovereignty” over the Nansha Qundao, including Xianbin Jiao, and the surrounding waters.
