Xie Feng Urges U.S. and China to Move Beyond Zero-Sum Thinking

On Tuesday, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng called for a shift away from zero-sum thinking in China-U.S. relations, emphasizing the deep interconnection between the two nations. Speaking at the sixth U.S.-China Business Forum hosted by Forbes, Xie highlighted the inseparable nature of the world’s two largest economies.

“There is simply no reason why the China-U.S. relationship should be a zero-sum game,” Xie asserted. “Our countries are deeply intertwined and basically inseparable from each other.”

In his address, Xie underscored the importance of seeking opportunities in a complex global landscape. “Expanding and deepening cooperation is the best way forward,” he said, suggesting that both nations can benefit from collaboration rather than competition.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to its path of reform and opening up, promising that this journey will continue unabated. “China’s journey of reform and opening up will never stop,” Xie stressed. “It will also bring opportunities to the United States and the world.”

Xie expressed China’s readiness to work with the United States to enhance dialogue and communication. “We are prepared to properly manage differences and expand mutually beneficial cooperation,” he stated. “Our goal is to stabilize and improve the relationship and take it forward.”

The ambassador’s remarks come at a critical time for China-U.S. relations, with global challenges requiring joint efforts from both nations. His message called for a renewed focus on collaboration to address shared concerns and harness mutual opportunities.
