Iran’s Foreign Minister Nominee Araghchi Emphasizes China and Russia

Abbas Araghchi, the nominee for foreign minister in Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s new administration, outlined his foreign policy priorities on Sunday, placing significant emphasis on strengthening ties with China and Russia.

Speaking before the Iranian parliament, Araghchi detailed his vision for Iran’s diplomatic future, as reported by the official news agency IRNA. He highlighted the importance of deepening relationships with China, Russia, and nations that have supported Iran through sanctions. Additionally, he expressed interest in engaging with emerging powers in Africa, Latin America, and East Asia, signaling a broadening of Iran’s international focus.

“Our foreign policy will center on nations that have stood by us during challenging times,” Araghchi stated. “We aim to forge stronger partnerships with these countries to advance mutual interests.”

He also underscored a commitment to bolstering relations with neighboring countries, emphasizing the integration of Iran’s infrastructure with theirs. “Strengthening ties with our neighbors is essential for regional stability and economic growth,” he said.

Regarding Europe, Araghchi suggested that the prospect of improved relations depends on Europe rectifying its “incorrect and hostile” stance towards Iran. “We are open to dialogue, but Europe must first address its policies that have hindered mutual trust,” he noted.

On relations with the United States, Araghchi emphasized a strategy of managing hostility while working to alleviate sanctions. “We will adopt a pragmatic approach to reduce tensions and mitigate the impact of sanctions on our nation,” he explained.

Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for Palestinian causes and regional resistance movements, including Hezbollah, against what he described as Israel’s “cruel and criminal” policies. “We stand with our allies in the region in opposing oppression and injustice,” he declared.

At 61, Araghchi brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as deputy foreign minister and chief nuclear negotiator. His appointment signals a continuation of Iran’s steadfast foreign policy positions under President Pezeshkian’s leadership.
