Global Youth Leaders Gather in Beijing for World Youth Development Forum

Amid the vibrant atmosphere of Beijing, over 2,000 young people from more than 130 countries and 20 international organizations have converged for the opening of the 2024 World Youth Development Forum. Coinciding with International Youth Day on Monday, the forum has become a global platform for youth leaders to voice their aspirations and collaborate on shaping a sustainable future.

More than 500 young leaders and representatives gathered at the forum’s opening ceremony and plenary meeting, marking a significant moment of unity and dialogue among the world’s youth. In a heartfelt video message, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed highlighted the pivotal role of young people in driving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Young people are the driving force behind sustainable development,” Mohammed stated. She called upon governments, multilateral organizations, the private sector, and civil society to provide the necessary resources and platforms for youth to make their voices heard. She emphasized the UN Youth Office’s commitment to collaborating with UN systems and teams worldwide to amplify young voices.

Mohammed stressed the importance of protecting the rights and freedoms of young people, as well as the need for quality education and skills to empower them. “All sectors of society must create spaces where you can take charge and make a difference for peaceful societies and robust democracies,” she urged the participants.

Following the Beijing events, participants will embark on visits to other Chinese cities, including Nanning and Hangzhou. There, they will engage in discussions on green development, digital innovation, cultural heritage, and the development of youth-oriented cities.

Under the theme “Together for a Better Future,” the forum aims to harness the collective strength of the youth to advance the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Development Initiative. The event is co-hosted by the All-China Youth Federation, the United Nations in China, and the forum’s organizing committee. This marks the second edition of the forum, following its inaugural event in 2022.
