Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation on Tuesday with Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi to discuss the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Safadi expressed grave concern over the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, stating that it has further intensified regional tensions and created a very dangerous situation. He emphasized that escalating the conflict benefits no one and only leads to multiple losses.
“The international community should take immediate action to prevent further escalation, stop violations of international law, achieve a ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible, and ultimately realize the independence of Palestine as a sovereign state through the two-state solution,” Safadi said.
Safadi acknowledged China’s objective and fair stance on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and expressed Jordan’s willingness to maintain communication with China. He hopes China will play a more significant role in promoting a ceasefire and stopping the war.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, firmly opposed and strongly condemned the assassination, stating that it violated basic norms of international relations, infringed on Iran’s sovereignty, undermined the ceasefire negotiation process in Gaza, and led to further escalation of the regional situation.
“The key to avoiding further escalation is to achieve a full and permanent ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible,” Wang Yi said, urging the international community to unite and form a consistent voice on this issue.
He praised Jordan’s important role in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and achieving peace in the Middle East. Wang Yi affirmed that China is willing to maintain communication and coordination with Jordan to encourage relevant parties to focus on overall peace, refrain from actions that escalate the situation, and resume ceasefire negotiations promptly.
“China will continue to stand firm with Arab countries, supporting all efforts conducive to achieving a permanent and full ceasefire in Gaza,” Wang Yi added. “We aim to avoid further escalation of conflicts and confrontations and promote the easing of the situation in the Middle East as soon as possible.”
