Xi Jinping Calls for Modernization of China’s Border, Coastal, and Air Defense
In anticipation of China’s Army Day on August 1, President Xi Jinping has emphasized the need to modernize the nation’s border, coastal, and air defense systems to strengthen national security and support economic development.
Chairing a study session of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Tuesday, Xi, who is also the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), highlighted the importance of bolstering defense capabilities in the face of new challenges and opportunities.
Extending Army Day greetings to all service personnel, militia, and reserve forces, Xi reflected on the significant reforms undertaken since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012. He noted that these efforts have “vigorously safeguarded China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” contributing to national security and development.
During the session, Huang Jizhong of the CMC’s Joint Staff Department presented on advancing modern border, coastal, and air defense systems, prompting discussions among the Political Bureau members. Following the discussions, Xi stressed the necessity of strengthening overall planning to enhance border defense capabilities.
He called for intensified efforts to improve infrastructure connectivity and promote joint development, aiming to create a defense framework that not only ensures national security but also facilitates economic and social progress.
Xi underscored the importance of integrating science and technology into national defense, urging greater emphasis on innovation to enhance capabilities. He also advocated for strengthening friendly and practical cooperation with neighboring countries to foster a favorable environment for China’s defense development.
Moreover, the president highlighted the need to improve air traffic management, support the growth of the low-altitude economy, and optimize the civil air defense model, aligning defense initiatives with broader economic objectives.
