China, Russia, and Laos convened their first trilateral foreign ministers’ meeting in Vientiane on Thursday, signaling a new chapter of cooperation aimed at strengthening regional security and stability.
The meeting, chaired by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, brought together Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The leaders discussed deepening collaboration amidst a global landscape facing challenges such as hegemonism, protectionism, and regional conflicts.
In his remarks, Wang Yi emphasized the growing influence of the “Global South” and highlighted the roles of China, Russia, and Laos as emerging economies in the Asia-Pacific region. He noted that enhanced cooperation among the three nations would not only safeguard their shared interests but also promote regional stability and prosperity.
Wang Yi also praised Laos for its effective chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and expressed China’s readiness to work with Russia in supporting ASEAN-centered regional cooperation. He underscored the importance of Laos and other ASEAN countries in maintaining the right direction for East Asian cooperation.
Both Lavrov and Saleumxay echoed sentiments of mutual support and shared positions on major issues. They affirmed that trilateral cooperation benefits their respective populations and expressed willingness to enhance communication and coordination with China. The ministers agreed to solidify political trust and plan future cooperation to create greater synergy in safeguarding common interests in the region.
