Xi Jinping Urges Xiamen Airlines to Boost Cross-Straits Exchanges

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on Xiamen Airlines to actively contribute to economic and social development by advancing exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Straits.

In a letter addressed to the employees of Xiamen Airlines on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, expressed his satisfaction with the airline’s remarkable progress over the past four decades.

“Starting from scratch, Xiamen Airlines has achieved leapfrog development,” Xi remarked. He encouraged the staff to remain committed to reform and innovation, enhance the airline’s core competitiveness, and contribute to the high-quality development of civil aviation, thereby bolstering China’s strength in transportation.

Xi Jinping has a longstanding connection with Xiamen Airlines. During his tenure as vice mayor of Xiamen, he assisted the airline in overcoming various challenges during its initial development stage.

Xiamen, located on the western side of the Taiwan Straits, plays a pivotal role in fostering cross-Straits exchanges and integration. The president’s call emphasizes the strategic importance of strengthening ties and cooperation across the Straits.

Established in July 1984, Xiamen Airlines is the first airline in China to operate under a modern corporate system. Today, it operates over 400 domestic and international air routes, serving nearly 40 million passengers annually.
