China has successfully hosted a historic meeting of leaders from 14 Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah, in Beijing from Sunday to Tuesday. This unprecedented gathering culminated in a significant step towards unity, with factions agreeing to end their longstanding divisions.
The milestone was marked by the signing of the “Beijing Declaration” at the closing ceremony of the dialogue, signaling a new chapter in Palestinian reconciliation efforts. “This marks the first time the 14 Palestinian factions have all gathered in Beijing for a reconciliation talk, offering a beacon of hope for the beleaguered Palestinian people,” said Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The declaration recognizes the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinian people. Furthermore, the factions agreed to form an interim national reconciliation government focused on the post-war governance of Gaza, aiming for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.
Representatives from the Palestinian factions expressed deep appreciation for China’s role in facilitating the dialogue. They hailed the “positive and constructive spirit” of the talks, emphasizing China’s contribution to ending divisions and strengthening unity among the Palestinian people.
At the closing ceremony, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the importance of perseverance in the reconciliation process. “The key to the internal reconciliation process of the Palestinian factions is to maintain firm confidence, grasp the direction, and proceed step by step,” he stated.
China reaffirmed its longstanding friendship with Palestine and expressed hope for the realization of national unity and independent statehood for the Palestinian people. “China will continue to work with all relevant parties to support this cause,” Mao Ning added.
This historic reconciliation in Beijing not only signifies a significant advancement in Palestinian unity but also reflects China’s growing role in facilitating peace and stability in the region.
