China’s UN Envoy Calls for Stronger Cooperation with SCO for Global Peace

China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, emphasized the crucial role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in promoting global peace and security during a Security Council debate on Friday. He urged the international community to strengthen collaboration between the UN and the SCO to address pressing global challenges.

Fu highlighted the SCO’s significant contributions to fostering a multipolar world and advancing inclusive economic globalization. He called on nations to heed the voices of SCO members and utilize the upcoming Summit of the Future as an opportunity to enhance equity and fairness in global governance.

“We must practice true multilateralism under the guidance of the UN Charter,” Fu stated, advocating for increased dialogue and cooperation between the UN and the SCO to bolster international peace efforts.

The ambassador praised the SCO’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and its resistance to Cold War mentality and bloc confrontations. He noted the organization’s adherence to the Shanghai Spirit, which promotes partnership, openness, and inclusiveness.

On regional security, Fu called for a joint commitment to combat terrorism, separatism, and extremism, labeling them as significant threats to global stability. He encouraged collaborative efforts between the UN and the SCO in areas such as counter-terrorism, narcotics control, and combating transnational organized crime. Fu also emphasized the importance of building capacities for security and law enforcement in the region.

Addressing the situation in Afghanistan, he urged cooperation between the SCO and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan to engage with the Afghan interim government. This collaboration aims to help Afghanistan avoid becoming a haven for terrorism and to achieve lasting peace and stability.

Fu also highlighted the SCO’s role in regional economic and social development. He commended the organization’s efforts in trade facilitation, infrastructure development, agriculture, poverty reduction, and sustainable development, which align with the UN’s goals.

Expressing support for the upcoming SCO Year of Sustainable Development in 2025, Fu emphasized China’s commitment as a founding member and the rotating president of the SCO. He reiterated China’s dedication to promoting world peace and development and to building a community with a shared future for humanity.
