Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Tuesday that the most urgent and realistic goal regarding the Ukraine crisis is to de-escalate tensions as swiftly as possible.
In a phone conversation with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, shared his concerns over the ongoing conflict.
Szijjarto briefed Wang on Hungary’s perspectives and recent efforts concerning the Ukraine crisis. He acknowledged China’s significant role in promoting peace, stating that China is an important force in facilitating a resolution.
Expressing Hungary’s willingness to collaborate with China, Szijjarto said his country aims to prevent further escalation of the conflict and foster conditions conducive to a political settlement.
Wang highlighted the recent visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to China, during which President Xi Jinping held strategic discussions with him on key issues related to peace. Wang noted that this visit underscored the mutual trust and deep friendship between the two leaders, elevating the all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Hungary to a new level.
He commended Hungary’s constructive role in mediating for peace and stressed the necessity for all parties involved in the Ukraine crisis to quickly reach a consensus. Wang emphasized principles such as no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no incitement by any party, deeming them essential for establishing the conditions necessary for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.
“China stands ready to join hands with Hungary to rally more forces supporting peace, amplify rational voices, and steer the situation towards a political settlement,” Wang stated.
