Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization (WHO) for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, met on Thursday with Winnie Byanyima, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and Jérôme Salomon, Assistant Director-General of the WHO, to advocate for stronger global efforts in combating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
Peng emphasized the critical importance of eliminating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis to safeguard human health and welfare, as well as to promote sustainable global development. She commended UNAIDS and the WHO for their proactive and fruitful endeavors in these fields.
Sharing China’s practices and experiences in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, Peng expressed her commitment to continue fulfilling her duties as a Goodwill Ambassador. She pledged to contribute further to global efforts in preventing and treating these diseases.
“With the joint efforts of all parties, I believe China’s cooperation with UNAIDS and the WHO will yield even greater outcomes,” Peng stated.
Byanyima and Salomon praised the positive achievements of the Chinese government and people in their fight against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, as well as in advancing healthcare. They expressed deep appreciation for Peng’s outstanding contributions since assuming her role as the WHO’s Goodwill Ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
The officials expressed their willingness to further strengthen cooperation with China in relevant fields. “We are committed to promoting continuous development and progress in global health for the benefit of people worldwide,” Byanyima said.
