In recent developments that may escalate tensions in the South China Sea, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense has called on the Philippines to immediately withdraw its personnel and ships illegally stationed at Xianbin Jiao, part of China’s Nansha Qundao.
At a regular press briefing on Friday, ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang stated that the actions of the Philippines have undermined regional peace and stability, creating new tensions in the disputed waters.
Zhang’s comments came in response to inquiries about recent operations by the China Coast Guard. The Coast Guard vessels reportedly carried out tracking, monitoring, and control measures against the Philippines’ attempts to transfer personnel and supplies to its Coast Guard ships stationed at Xianbin Jiao.
“The relevant actions of the Philippine side seriously violate China’s sovereignty and the Declaration on the Conduct of the Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), particularly Article 5,” Zhang emphasized. He stressed that China has indisputable sovereignty over Nansha Qundao, including Xianbin Jiao, and that Chinese law enforcement operations are legitimate and justified.
Article 5 of the DOC stipulates that all parties should refrain from inhabiting the presently uninhabited islands and reefs in the South China Sea. By maintaining personnel and ships at Xianbin Jiao, the Philippines is in direct violation of this agreement, according to the Chinese spokesperson.
The situation underscores the ongoing complexities in the South China Sea, a vital shipping corridor rich in resources. The international community watches closely as the actions of both nations could have significant implications for regional stability and international maritime law.
