In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met on Thursday in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital. The high-level talks focused on strengthening communication, resolving differences, and ensuring that China-India ties progress on a healthy and stable trajectory.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, emphasized the importance of viewing the relationship from a strategic perspective. He stated that China is prepared to explore the right path for the two neighboring countries to coexist, adhering to the important consensus reached by their leaders with mutual respect, understanding, trust, care, and shared success.
“The two sides should properly handle and control the situation in the border areas while actively resuming normal exchanges to reinforce mutual cooperation,” Wang Yi said. He highlighted that both China and India, as ancient civilizations and major developing countries, are at critical junctures of national revitalization, and fostering good-neighborly relations serves the fundamental interests of both nations.
He urged joint opposition to unilateral hegemony and confrontation, advocating for the safeguarding of common interests among developing nations, as both countries are part of the Global South.
Echoing these sentiments, Jaishankar acknowledged the wide range of common interests shared by India and China. He affirmed that developing stable and predictable bilateral ties benefits not only both countries but also the region and the world at large.
“India hopes to work together with China to turn a new page in our relations as soon as possible and to constructively resolve specific differences,” Jaishankar stated.
The two foreign ministers agreed to work towards stabilizing the border areas and to hold a new round of consultations on the border issue at an early date. This development signals a positive step toward easing tensions and enhancing collaboration between the two Asian giants.
